WHAT’S YOUR NEXT STEP?

It was one of the most devastating times in my life. We were twelve hundred miles from home and everything fell apart. A miracle of God produced forty dollars. That and a borrowed credit card got us home. Somewhere outside of Greensboro, North Carolina I began to tell Connie—“I’m the head and not the tail, above only and not beneath.” She agreed and we talked about what that would mean as I drove straight through, twenty-two hours. I arrived home with sixteen dollars in my pocket—my whole future—a ten, a five, and a one.

That would have been the end of the story if I had not taken the next step.

After sleeping twelve hours I was up and since it was Wednesday evening we went to church, because that’s what we did. When the pastor received the offering I pulled out the dollar bill. I heard a voice—“I thought that you were the head and not the tail?” I said, “I am”. The voice said, “Act like it, give the ten.” I did. Not happily. Not with joy. Not because I wanted to. But I did. Because I was the head and not the tail, above only and not beneath.

That would have been the end of the story if I had not taken another step.

The next day I made a call to a small town pastor. A week before he had rebuffed me. I felt like knocking on the door again. Persistence payed off and he invited me up for the weekend. The weekend stretched into a two week meeting. That led to the next meeting. We kept traveling, holding successful revivals across the nation for the next three years.

You have to take the next step.

What’s your next step?

Sometimes the next step is obvious because it’s the only thing that you can do. At other times the next step is hard to figure out because there are so many steps that could be taken—but only one is the next step that will get you to where you want to be. Sometimes you take your next step and find out that it was the wrong step and you have to retrace your steps.

This is a call to action. Nothing of significance happens without taking the next step. You’re stuck where you are with what you have until you’re willing to take the next step. What’s your next step?
